What is a burr when sharpening? A burr is a thin ridge of metal that forms along the edge of a blade during sharpening. The presence of a burr often indicates that the sharpening process has reached the edge. Many sharpeners remove the burr during the final stages of sharpening or stropping to create a cleaner, sharper, and more refined cutting edge.
