When should different sharpening grits be used? Different sharpening grits are designed for differentstages of edge maintenance. Coarser grits remove metal more quickly and are often used to restore damaged or dull edges. Medium grits help refine the edge, while finer grits are commonly used to improve sharpness and produce a smoother finish. Many sharpeners use multiple grits in sequence to achieve the desired edge.
