These Hickory Staves are a great way to learn basic bow building. The staves are floor tillered with the string grooves already in place. All you need to do is remove wood from the belly to adjust the poundage and final tillering, then stain and seal to your liking.
Hickory is a great bow building wood due to its strength and flexibility. It's easy to work with, and takes stain and paint very well.
Most of these staves will produce a bow in the 50 pound range at a 28" draw, but you can easily remove enough material to make a bow in the 40s. For a heavier bow, simply remove less wood.
Once you have the bow at your preferred weight, simply sand and paint or stain it.
These bow staves do not come with a shelf cut in, so you can decide for yourself whether you want a right handed or left handed bow. Or you can create an off-the-knuckle ambidextrous bow. It's all up to you!
