blank blank The Japanese G.I. Bow follows the design originated by bowyers in post-World War II Japan.

During the Allied occupation of Japan martial arts were banned due to their association with pre-war militarization. Among these banned disciplines was Kyudo, or Japanese archery.

Needing a way to support their families during this ban, Japanese bowyers noticed American G.I.s practicing archery in their off hours. The Japanese bowyers then started making and selling Western-style longbows utilizing traditional Japanese materials and techniques.

The result is a finely crafted bamboo-laminated longbow. These bows are a perfect example of the kind of cross-cultural exchange that sustained the art of bow-making in Japan during this unique period in history.

Our techs have shot the Japanese G.I. Bow and report that is an extremely smooth-shooting bow.

Features a double arrow shelf making it suitable for right or left handed shooters. The handle is wrapped with genuine leather. Comes with a stringer, and a bow string (a mixture of B-50 & B-55 string material). The bow measures 68" long, with the bottom limb being 2" shorter than the top limb. Available in pull weights of 45#, 50#, 55#, and 60# @ a 28" draw.

  • B-50/B-55 Bow string
Remember that with a traditional bow the weight will change depending upon what your draw length is. Bow weight will change approximately ±2½ pounds for every inch from a bows rated draw length. So a bow rated 45# @ 28" bow is roughly a 42½# @ 27" or 47½# @ 29". Draw weight is marked at the nearest 5# increment to actual weight, (2#'s under and 3#'s over). This is an industry wide standard.

A bow stringer is recommended for stringing any recurve bow or longbow. Stringing a bow without a bow stringer, or stringing it backwards will void a bow's warranty. It is recommended to unstring your primitive bow when you are done shooting, and only string it right before shooting. Store your bow on its side, or hanging vertically from a peg. Never rest the bow on the lower tip for extended periods of time. Never dry fire the bow (shooting without an arrow).
