  • Q:

I am using the Byron Ferguson 500 spine arrows and they are shooting tremendous, will the gold tip traditional carbon shafts in the 500 spine perform the same or should i be using a different model.
Asked on 10/7/2014 by Brandall from Roy, Utah

      A:

Yes the deflection in the arrow is the same so it will perform the same. The only difference will be that the Byron Ferguson arrows will drop faster because of their weight.

They come with the nocks already installed, but you can order them uncut (No Shaft Cut Service Requested). However, you can remove the nocks your self.

You may be able to just get away with changing your point weight, also you may just have to cut a little bit off your arrow

      A:

You can use the test shaft for shooting. To cut the shaft a high speed cut off arrow saw is needed.

What inserts do these come with? And what thread size will the inserts accept?

  • Q:

I have read that one must cut the arrow to the right length to 'tune' the arrow to the bow. This requires many iterative cuts with a subsequent shot through paper until it is correct for your bow and specific draw length. My question is: How does one cut the shaft, shoot through the paper into a target and then pull the arrow out of the target without loosing the tip and insert in the middle of the target? You would not be able to glue the insert until the proper length is determined.

Glue your insert in on your test shaft and cut from the nock end

      A:

You glue in the insert and screw in the point. Don't forget, the point weight will also affect the flight of the shaft. An increase in point weight will decrease the spine, and a decrease in point weight will increase the spine. Anyway, to continue, if the shaft appears to have too little spine, shorten it by cutting off small increments from the nock end. When it flies straight, it's ready for the fletch. Good shooting!

No, the Gold Tip shafts come with inserts but you must furnish the adhesive.. I've had success with epoxy and Insert Iron (tm).

I would use brass inserts and use a weight tube to get the weight you are looking for.

      Hello again,
I responded to this request yesterday, but somehow missed the fact that you are shooting Gold Tip arrows. Here's one way to achieve your desired 620 gr arrow. I'm sure there are many, and you'll have to decide which one gives the best performance out of your bow.
I'm guessing you shoot the 3555 spine, but if you use the 5575 shafts, you can make similar calculations. And when all is said and done, you may want to adjust the length or point weight to get an arrow that flies great from your bow. Anyway, here's one approach:
I shoot an arrow about 1 inch longer than my draw length, but to get the weight you desire, you may need to go a little longer. Let's say you start with 27.5 inch, that shaft should weigh approx. (27.5 inch x 8.6 gr/inch) 236..5 gr. Now, add approx. 25.5 in of 8 gr/inch weight tube ( 3 Rivers # 6731X ) to give 205 gr. I approximated the shorter weight tube compared to the shaft to allow 1 inch on either end for point insert and nock. Now add approx. 11.4 gr for insert, 12 gr for nock and 10 gr for fletching and glue. That gives a fletched shaft of (236.5+205+ 11.4+ 12+10) 474.9 gr. A point or broadhead of 145 gr brings the total arrow weight to 619.9 gr. Small adjustments to shaft length, fletch weight, etc can be accommodated by making compensatory changes to point weight or whatever. You can make similar calculations for the 5575 shafts if they work better for you.
      I hope this is helpful.
