Honest hunting with the Longbow......Yea, thats how I would describe " Longbow: A hunting life " The stories in here do not just deal with the "Hunt" but much more the camaraderie of good friends, a sense of adventure and lifes daily challenges. What is refreshingly absent in this book is ego fanning and such and such inches of antler. A fun read not only for the hunting archer but for the non hunting reader as well. After reading this book one willl be day dreaming and making ready for this years archery hunts. Highly recommend this book. Butch NM

Best book I read in 2012!

Mr. Campbell has a way of immersing you in the experience, as I read chapter after chapter I felt like I was sitting around a campfire in a hunting camp. It was as if I was listening to the stories of an experienced hunter sharing his life experiences both good and bad. Rarely do I find myself reading, enjoying each page and regretting that the book will eventually come to an end all at the same time. This is one of those books. I would love to tell you more, but to do so would rob you of the experience of reading this wonderful book yourself.

The best part of the book is the water buffalo hunt. Ants that are distracting the hunt and the way Karen ignores this. the hog hunts in the islands are very exciting. The dedication to stalking and the heat Jay endures is very awesome. he pays attention to details about how much practice is needed just to longbow hunt. he also tells about the real hunting letdowns as hunting with stone points and the way the stone point bounces off the hogitself. his battle with cancer and the real life highs and lows. Alligator hunting is a real look at what can happen if you work hard enough. The book is a true longbow hunting at its natural traditional way it should be.

Campbell pulls bowstrings and heart strings...and no punches... in this well written collection of short stories and vignettes of life in the wild with a longbow as a guide. If you enjoy colorful characters, in off the beaten path locales, this book is a cure for the typical hunting story blahs. Buy this book!

I have known Jay Campbell for about 15 years. I love listening to his stories and adventures. Now I get to read them and let my imagination take me to places I may never see but will be able to enjoy thru this book and I hope others to come. His words captivated my reading time and brought to life the man who built my bow, Steve Hohensee. Having Steve on the adventures just makes them more exciting to me. Knowing how much Karen has helped to influence these pages adds another dimension to the quality of the book for me. I look forward to more chapters of adventure and beauty in the world's great places. Awesome!

If hunting and those who write about it is to survive, credit will be to Jay Campbell and those who choose to follow his example. The experience itself matters more than a blood stained arrow. And the telling of the story has as much to do with the people and places as the game that is pursued. Campbell is the needle, the reader is the thread. Prepare to be woven through a complex fabric of life, love, loss, and retribution while being taken on a globe trotting journey. Trail along from chasing hogs in Florida's humid, suffocating swamps to the crocodile infested Melville Island where the author, fresh from cancer surgery, faces Asiatic water buffalo with nothing more than his longbow.
Every established outdoor writer should be looking in their rearview, here comes Campbell charging up the passing lane!

This is masterfully written book by one of traditional archery's great adventurers. Jay travels the world in pursuit of adventure. This book does not dwell on the kill but emphasizes the process. I think Jay captures the true essence of our passion. I found the book to be an enjoyable and entertaining read with many real "characters" adding plenty of local color, irregardless of which hemisphere in which the action takes place.

I have shot and hunted with longbows and recurves for over 20 years. I have gotten rid of my longbows and retained my recurves. This Book makes me want to get another longbow.
