Comments about Shooting the Longbow (and Other Tips):

As another reviewer noted this book is from an earlier time (it's 42 years old!) and details Dick Palmer's method for shooting ridiculously heavy (like, 180 lb!) bows.

Coincidentally, as I write this the current issue of TradArcher's World has an interview with Dick Palmer, and he describes how he tore a shoulder muscle shooting his heavy bows and was never able to pull more than 50-60lbs again.

The one thing I found interesting in this book is Palmer's exercise rig- a stand with a pulley and weights that he used for building up his bow strength. It strikes me as a very practical idea, and something a handy archer could easily make of wood or metal.

Comments about Shooting the Longbow (and Other Tips):

This book is from a different time and we have learned that 100# bow isnt needed for hogs and deer. I found the book funny and fun to read.
Gosh it's hard to get a grin for only a couple bucks. My wife and I had a good time reading it together.

Comments about Shooting the Longbow (and Other Tips):

This book is fortunately inexpensive and is also a quick and easy read. It does not offer any specific or useful shooting tips. The author seems to encourage shooting longbows of much heavier draw weights than what current trends are; at one point suggesting that 60-70 lbs is adequate for deer. The book oozes of machismo - right down to the shirtless strongman picture on the back cover! I will admit that it is from a time period of different attitudes towards longbows than today, and it does offer the saving grace of a good chuckle.
