I have read all of Fred Asbell's books and have his instructional video. This book is his best by far. My only criticism, and it is minor, is that the book is a little wordy. The entire book is a must read for the both the new and sophisticated instinctive shooter. The best chapter is "Why We Miss." I am relatively new to archery. However, I have been shooting shotguns using the instinctive technique since 1987. I have read many books, viewed many videos, and taken several clinics on instinctive shooting here and abroad. The basics for shotgunning and archery are the same. Asbell has very nicely applied the basics to the specific mechanics of drawing a bow and letting an arrow fly. I was hesitant to buy this book for fear I was wasting money on repetition. Of course, some of the material is covered in his early books. However, the evolution and refinement in his thinking from his first book to this book is very clear. He has explained the need to master the mechanical fundamentals. Yet, he makes it clear that you cannot think about the mechanics when taking the shot. You must concentrate, concentrate, concentrate on the target and "let it happen." As one of my shooting instructors kept saying "believe in the force." My greatest flaw in shooting instinctively is that I tend to analyze the shot when taking it. And that leads almost invariably to a miss. When I let it happen and believe in the force, it seems I can't miss. Yet, I can't tell you exactly what I did to hit. When you read this book it should be with an open mind and a willingness to learn and to practice a lot (practicing the right techniques -- perfect practice makes perfect). When I first began to learn instinctive shooting I had been shooting a lot of American skeet -- gun mounted and very formulaic as to leads, etc. When I attended my first instinctive shooting clinic and shot instinctively at the first target -- the equivalent of low house 7 in skeet, a very easy target -- I missed and missed and missed and missed. I stunk up the place. However, I was determined to shoot instinctively. By the end of the 3 day course, I virtually couldn't miss. When I returned to my skeet squad I continued to shoot instinctively much to the amazement of all I did shoot 25 straights and I shot every target out of the house, broken, wobbling, whatever. It is in the hunting field, however, that instinctive shooting really shines. Do I miss now? Yes! And it's usually because I didn't concentrate on the target and was thinking about gun mount, target angle, etc. If you want to become a better instinctive shooter, the information in this book, if followed, will help. I'm following up this book with Asbell's instinctive shooting clinic. Hands on coaching by someone who knows what they are doing beats just reading about it.

Instinctive Shooting I & II were artful and masterful how-to manuals. This text is a careless effort, best left on the vendor's shelf. Long bows have not changed, nor have their handles-it is simply that a new design, the hybrid bow, is in need of a consumer, and G. Fred helped no one shot it. Second, can one write about penentration without referencing the works of Dr. Ed Ashby? New to the traditional-by I or II!

I would highly recommend this book for beginners and experienced shooters alike. I read Mr. Asbell's first book on Instinctive Shooting in the late eighties. His insight, technique and ability to articulate the fine points of shooting are unparalleled. I really liked his exercise suggestions. I liked the fact that he makes the technique distinctions when appropriate between recurves and longbows

Comments about Advanced Instinctive Shooting For Bowhunting ...The Rest of the Story:

I had been away from hunting and recreational archery for many years. A friend recommended 3 Rivers Archery as a good place to start to get back into the sport. Upon contacting one of the advisors they suggested Instinticitive Shooting II along with the video. It was a great place to start and saved me many hours of trial and error. When Advanced Instinctive Shooting became available I ordered the book based upon my experience with Instinctive Shooting II and the video. I was not disappointed. This was like Instinctive Shooting (grad school). My groups are much tighter, my shooting is much more consistent and my accuracy at longer distances has improved greatly. This book is a must for anyone who wants to improve in the sport.

Helped me analyze and fix some problems with the basics that I had let slip through the cracks over the years. Very easy to understand and apply these lessons and very well organized book. Fun read too...Fred was in top form writing this one.
My arrows are flying straight and true again. So glad I bought this book!
