Over the last four years I have hunted with a recurve and now, a long bow with a recurve riser. In that time I had no instruction and never took the time to read on the subject of instinctive shooting. While many people can pick up the required skill set "instinctively", I found that I was not one of them. I struggled to be consistent in my practice and that can translate to confidence on the hunt. This book is full of relevant instruction on skills, form, the progression of the shot and most importantly, the reasons behind Asbell's thinking. His writting style is entertaining at the same time effectively conveying instructions on a physical skill through the written word AND IT WORKS!

Following a read of vol 1, vol 2 formed a complete picture of the grip, stance, draw, and release, not to mention the mental aspect of why instinctive shooting works in the field. Vol 2 contains info on longbow and compound shooting, but I read this as FYI since I'm learning to shoot a recurve, my first bow of any kind. The improved photos and diagrams for vol 2 are extremely helpful in understanding the mechanics and how they should be natural in the shot process. For both vol 1 and 2 it would be nice to have a short photo essay on how to modify a given shelf/grip to maximize the instinctive feel, including an example of filing down a shelf to work properly.

I thought vol. 1 was good, but vol. 2 surpassed it. Asbell touches on some subjects he didn't cover in the first, giving much more detailed explanations in several areas. One of the most helpful sections to me was his description of how the type of grip your bow has affects your hand positioning. This wasn't given a complete treatment in vol. 1, but vol 2 was right on the money! Thanks!

I read this book a few years ago, along with the video and earlier edition in hopes of becoming an accurate shot. Unfortunately, it didn't cover form well at all, and many of the little nuances he teaches were detrimental, eventually becoming bad habbits hat needed correcting. Very enjoyable, and I read it frequently, but it's not a solid base to learn on, and I wouldn't suggest it to anyone learning how to shoot a bow.
