    I was hoping for a little more conceptual ideas instead of simply "this is the way it's done". One of the things that I love about traditional archery is that everyone can develope their own style and feel for it. This book seems to have a pretty rigid structure that they want you to follow exactly. That being said, there is a TON of info at a very reasonable price, and this is a valuable addition to any book collection.

      I gave this a 3 star rating because I haven't finished the book yet. However what I have read id clear and helpful. IMO This is a very good reference book but the chapters themselves are very readable.

        I am a beginning archer and wish I read Chapter 1 before buying my first bow. The draw weight of my first bow was a little heavy for me (over bowed). Where I wish I went with a lighter draw weight for my first bow, the form exercises in the book quickly helped me develop my archery muscles before I took my first shot. I was actually on the paper with my first shot but go back to the book frequently to help refine my form.

        I like that the author starts with basic form and "instinctive shooting". My first bow is an Iron Mountain 62" longbow 58# @ 28" and my goal is to become a proficient instinctive shooter. My one disappointment is the book is more geared towards the Olympic style target shooter. Shooting off of the shelf, as most traditional longbow shooters do, is seen as a disadvantage and there is not much information about hunting as a traditional archer.

        I feel the emphasis on consistency and good from are key to hitting the mark every time and should be practiced before going out to hunt. After that I would recommend getting out into the woods and doing some stump shooting to explore what works best for you in situations that would be more akin to hunting as opposed to target shooting at the range where it is much easier to get into correct form every time.

        Overall this book is a good read with a ton of information on form, equipment and tuning. It is a book that I will go back to time and time again as a reference.

          I recently got back into the archery scene after a long hiatus. It's good to be home! I was taught as a child by my father who was an excellent teacher, however he didn't ever really give me the theory behind shooting. It was just "do it this way because..." That definitely gave me a good foundation, but being the inquisitive type, I wanted to seek out more knowledge, more of the "why" so to speak.

          This is a great book and is exhaustive in its content. I think new archers and experienced alike would find something they like about the book and something useful. The sections on equipment and technique were spot on and at times, the information was almost too exhaustive! I can see myself rereading sections and possibly even packing the text up for the range. Great book and I would highly recommend it.

              To start off I should note that I am an amateur stickbow shooter. I have been shooting a compound for several years but just recently picked up a recurve for a little change. My bow shop is great but they just don't have a lot of knowledge when it comes to stickbows. This is the part where this book comes in. I had a ton of questions about anchoring and shooting form. When I first started I was slapping myself with the string but this book taught me that was due to a brace height issue. For that information alone it was worth the pricetag. I will keep it around as a reference guide for tuning and any questions I may have about the recurve in the future.

                    I have a very extensive hunting and fishing library with a very good section on traditional archery. This book fits right in and is a great complement to Byron Ferguson's Become the Arrow and Brian Sorrel's book. While both of those books provide great tips on shooting and much more, Shooting the Stickbow is the best at providing detailed technical instruction on how to make the shot.
                    It's not a great read, but it is a very strong book in terms of information. As others have suggested, it's basically a textbook about traditional bow shooting -- literally everything you need to know is listed.
                    I consider myself an intermediate level shooter with many years of experience, but still found this book helpful - especially the section on mental preparation. The best part is the very reasonable price tag.
