I got this tool after trying a cheap little one-size-only taper tool, mainly because I'm now handling different size shafts, and this tool has guides for all the common sizes. The cheaper one worked OK if I used it carefully, but this one works much better. Having the guide positioned farther back and machined to greater accuracy probably has a lot to do with that.

In my case I like to cut the tip taper before I lacquer the shaft, mainly so I can have the tip overlap the lacquer coat a little for more complete weather-sealing. It also gives me a surface to grip when dipping, without leaving fingerprints in the wet lacquer coat.

One warning: if you compression-straighten or sand the shaft before you cut the taper (like I do), you'll very likely have a little bit of play within the guide. This can easily throw your taper off-center, but you can deal with it by wrapping a strip of paper around the shaft under the guide. Just make sure the strip of paper is long enough to almost cover the circumference of the shaft, without overlapping itself at the ends. Getting the paper in place may be easier if you slip the paper within the guide and insert the tip through the paper.

One small complaint: it would be nice if each guide had the guide size stamped or scribed on it, rather than just being color-coded. I'm a bit worried about one day losing the printed color-coding key.

I had the original Taper tool, which was actually handy (and I still use it sometimes) for the point side, but the nock end just plain sucked.

I was looking forward to trying this version, and the build quality of it is utterly fantastic. However, the tolerances are so tight, that some 23/64 shafts that I also bought from 3 rivers didn't fit, and there is no size up to move into. I realize that this is not the fault of the taper tool, technically, since the shafts are wood, and likely prone to slight swelling or deformation due to humidity and wood grain.

But, then again, this is for tapering wood, right? In my opinion, they should have left a little more slack. However, if you can get an extra 23/64, and simply drill it out a little, that would probably be a fine solution.

But, as for me, I still like the cheap disposable taper tools. They seem to work well.

Really feels like a quality tool. Excellent, quick work of oak shafts and cuts through softer woods like butter. If your debating between other hand tapering tools & this one its worth the added expense

This tool was incredibly easy to use. The blade was sharp and created a beautiful ribbon of cedar as I twisted the tool on the shaft. The field tips fit snuggly on the tapered end and the arrows have performed well.

I am using the new version of the Tru-Centre Taper tool (V2), I was a little worried that these pencil sharpener type tools would struggle on the Douglas Fir but was pleasantly surprised that it shaved beautifully, no gouging as some had reported on harder woods.

This thing is idiot proof (thankfully) and I just used a light pressure to shave what looks like to my beginners eye as a perfect taper. I believe that this version fixed a number of issues experienced on the original tool.

It took me around 30 seconds per arrow per taper and again I would stress that a light pressure is all that is needed.

This is a fantastic tool for sure, I used a silicon lubricant spray on the O-rings as opposed to Vaseline as recommended. I would recommend this above Vas or some other grease that is not petroleum based for greater longevity of the o-rings

This taper tool is super simple to use and creates perfect, smooth tapers on wood arrows. It's a fool proof design. Arrow shafts fit deep into the tool which helps make the taper more precise.

I'm impressed by the quality. This is not a cheapy pencil sharpener. It is well built and should last a very long time. I found it handy to buy an extra set of inserts so I can put one on both ends - nock end and point end - so I don't have to change one back and forth frequently. For me - the occational arrow maker - I find this tool well worth the price.

This taper tool is one of the best hand tools I've bought for awhile. Use it for field fixes, when wife won't let me make cedar dust in the basement in winter and on club arrows in youth indoor program. The only weak spot I see will be the rubber rings around the cutting head sleeves, when they wear cutting will become sloppier. They need to be watched. Excellent cut from first arrow, perfect shoulder - no wander off to a high spot - really Tru Center. All the accessory blades & wrenches excellent fit. Great product .

I purchased this essentially as a luxury item because I have the original taper tool and spending another $ was a luxury. I found the original difficult to adjust properly for the correct taper and this version requires no adjustment. This new version works beautifully. I'll probably give the old tool away; it's functional if one wants to spend the time to adjust it. I use this tool only occasionally to re-taper shafts broken off immediately behind the point and re-tapering shortened shafts. For those purposes I could have purchased an inexpensive "pencil sharpener" style. However, the quality of this tool suggests that it will last a lifetime. One suggestion is to add knurling or ridges to the barrel to give a grip. I'm very pleased with this tool

I am happy with the performance of this product and the build quality; however, the tool is too heavy, in my opinion, to be packed alongside other equipment items for field use, as a sharp knife and a good eye can do almost or as good a job.
