Not so hot

I have been using trueflight feathers for years whether it be in a chopper or making flu flu feathers and it seems that every time I get them they keep getting worse. They are very inconsistent from the quill width to the feather height, (a problem I never had with these years ago). I have found that they vary in quality from one pack to the next and from barred to solid colors. I recently have ordered a pack of traditional barred feathers and was disgusted with the quality. I sometimes make flu flu feathers out of the full length feathers and the feather height on some isn't even 7/8 of an inch, very undesirable for flu flu feathers (I like at least 1 1/8"). Look, I realize that they are a natural product, and they say that they are commercial quality now, but isn't consistency and repeatability one of the key factors in accuracy? Then tell me how any archer would be satisfied with such low quality. Oh, I know, because there really aren't any other feather makers anymore. So I guess that all of us will have to just keep buying these feathers and hope that things might change. Who knows maybe you'll get a pack of good ones, but these days I have found this to be very rare. You might be better buying the pre cut shapes instead.

The material itself is top shelf, consistent and in perfect condition. My only complaint is the cost of a product that is dumped by the truckload from every processing plant. That said I would still buy them again.

This product was arrived exactly as it was advertised. Perfect feather! I have been shooting for just short of a year and have been fletching my own arrows for about 6 months. All I did was cut the length of the feather to some old flu flu's that I had purchases and glued them on with some quick fletch. Leterally that is all I did and I can shoot these from my recurve and my 50lb compound. They have not fallen off or fraid. Very nice product and would suggest it to anyone of any skill level. *I added a picture of my flu flu's. The yellow one is an old one that I bought from the store. The blue ones are ones are the ones that I put on in less than 1 hour on my first try.

Fletching for an elf arrow

I mentioned my experiment with making an elf arrow (a la Legolas) in another review (points). I am really pleased with the full length feathers that I am using for my project. One can get 2 ea. – 4" feathers out each full length one. The Autumn Brown Barred looks great as a INDEX feather with yellow for the hens. (FYI, the hens started out as standard 4" shield cut. The leading edge of the index was cut to match.) Wrapping the feathers with artificial sinew was easier than expected. I started with a ¼" strip of fletching tape wrapped around the shaft about a ¼" in front of the fletching to tag the sinew to the shaft and started winding the sinew with an occasional smear of glue. Twisting the sinew to make a thin tread when you get to the feathers makes it easier to get the barbs to heal (and they do heal quite nicely). A bit more glue at the end of the fletching and again at the nock and we are done. I need to get a feather burner and extra ribbons to make a consistent profile. Taping the feathers on both sides with painters tape, tracing the shape on that and cutting with scissors works, but not as accurately as I would like.

Conclusion: If I can do it first time out, anyone can.

I use these for making a wide variety of primitive and traditional arrows. Both conventional and unconventional designs. They are great for hand fletching and allow you to cut feathers to the length or shape you desire.

They are also a very good value when compared to precut feathers.

Young Feather Burner

I have been making my own arrows for years and now always use full TrueFlight feathers and splice different colors to make even more interesting looks to my fletches. I fine these TrueFlight feathers to be very consistent in size and appearance. So when I use my Jo-Jan jig and my Young Feather Burner I get consistent perfectly placed and sized fletches on each arrow or bolt. This is very important when making spliced fletches since a little wider or narrower base will cause the fletching to not be aligned in the Jo-Jan jig. This in turn will make it hard for the different surfaces of the feather to heal when the process is done. A lot of the time it looks like the feather will not heal correctly when they are still un-burnt, but after they are burned to the form on the Young Feather burner, they heal and look and shoot terrifically. Thanks to the good quality of the TrueFlight feathers.

As many have stated, this natural product can be inconsistent. I burn mine in a three inch shield and can get three to four fletchings from a single uncut. When switching from recurve to compound, compound releases are less weighted down on the back end of the arrow and gain six feet per second in speed over the leading plastic vane. Lastly, when stored in a garage over summer, trueflight feathers do not worp from high temperatures.
