I've used short lengths of bamboo for backing before (to reduce shipping costs), but didn't get nearly the consistent segment length and thickness this full length piece offered. It was clearly from a very large bamboo, and the piece I got is fully 2" wide full length. Working it in one piece makes it much easier to balance the upper and lower limb during tillering.

This product is not pre-planed, so you need some way of taking it down to a flat bonding surface. I use a Bosch electric planer and take it down full width in multiple passes until the edges are almost sharp. When the ends are later tapered, the edges at the tips will show somewhat thicker, and help stiffen the tips for maximum performance.

excllent suff!...with a little work it made for excellent backing...very workable...and had a very consistent elastistity throughout...I used it for a self bow and also a trout net...

smooth on or gorilla glue worked well on two different try's...

Purchased six at a time all arrived in good shape. Best know what your in for planning boo. Take your time, my small jointer worked great.

I used this product to back a Hickory bow stave that I purchased on line. I made a "Dan Perry" style bow with 2" of reflex. I used some coarse grit sand paper and a long section of 2X4, to sand the concave side of the bamboo flat first, this gave me a good surface to glue up. I lightly scraped the outside surface of the bamboo, leaving the nodes intact, I carefully heat tempered the bamboo with a small propane torch. Then stained and sealed it. The nodes were 4-6" apart. This bow is light as a feather and shoots like a dream.

Sorry to say but there is to much variance in the node separation for one end to the other. And, the nodes could be further apart. Suggest 3 Rivers sort their stock based upon specific request from the bowyer as to what length bow he needs to construct.
