      this is best used as a lamination with other wood such as cheery or ash.
      it will make a bow that is very durable and easy to draw with a draw of any were from 25 lb to 80 lb.

          I have ordered about 10 of these in the past year. All of them have made wonderful bows. I glue them on right out of the package and sand them down to a finish. I have never recieved one that I was not able to glue right on out of the package. The performance is outstanding. Makes all the bows I make durable and reliable. Wonderful product for the price.

                I have built six (successful) self bows so far with 3 of them having a hickory backing. This was my second backing strip from 3Rivers. I was entirely satisfied with the first one (along with everything else I have ordered) and the resulting longbow and so had no qualms about ordering another one.
                When I received the second strip I immediately noted what appeared to be a friction burn about 1/2" wide completely across the strip and about 3" from one end. I emailed (with attached pics) Customer Service that day and and the next day called and spoke with a polite young man who explained that I could return it and get another one although I would be responsible for shipping as he (and his supervisor) thought that the burn would not affect the integrity of the bow.
                I was rather disappointed in their answer as it was me, not them, who was the customer and was the one supposed to receive "100% satisfaction guaranteed". I am reluctant to put the work required into making a bow with something clearly less than the best quality material available. I was surprised, moreover, that the backing strip made it through 3Rivers quality control process.
                This experience has made me reluctant to order further products from 3Rivers that I can not obtain elsewhere even if the price is higher.

                    I used this backing to make a Red Oak/Hickory backed Longbogbow for my Father in Law as a gift.

                    I needed a bow that drew at between 55-65 lbs, and I had no problem reaching that goal. He LOVES this bow.

                    This was my 12th bow made using tools and materials from 3 Rivers, and I've yet to have one break on me yet. (Knock on wood) I heartily recommend their stuff. LIke always, I recommend a detailed examination of any item for faults or flaws, and 3Rivers return policy has always been fair.

                      i glued this puppy up to a red oak core i had. got it floor tiller'd, put a string on it and pulled it to about 10" and found out the hard way that the end grain crossed my whole limb. making this piece useless for a backing. i should have checked the grain before i got excited and glued it up. but i was relying on 3 rivers to send a good piece. they cant control mother nature but they could have thought of the finished product before selecting this piece.
                      would recommend, but its a gamble and probably wouldnt use as a backing again unless the grain was perfect.

                            A good product but very expensive to ship. I paid [...] to have this item shipped to WA state. It would be nice if Three Rivers would give you the option of having the strip sawed in half before shipping, which would eliminate having to pay extra shipping. It could then easily be spliced together.

                                I used this hickory backing as two lams on my lamiated bow, it worked great. Don't be fooled by the picture, however, it comes with just one strip of wood instead of the three it shows in the pictue. Other then that I'm satisfied.
