After reading the rave reviews on this longbow, I decided to purchase the Montana. Finding one in a 55# was a little difficult because everyone seemed to be sold out of this poundage. Because I needed to pick one up before a hunting trip and still have time to dial in the tuning before the trip, I was forced to buy one at Bass pro and NOT the best place to buy anything that has anything to do with traditional bows. I purchased the bow and went thru the tuning process, which was quite easy. But when I removed the ugly (in my opinion) black leather grip to install a "sure grip" (from 3Rivers) I realized that there were gaps in the laminate on the grip portion of the bow. the stock grip hid this defect. It seems quality control was out to lunch that day. The bow was nice to shoot, and did tune well out of the box, but I expect a little more quality when purchasing a bow, ecspecialy from a company like Bear. They did offer to replace the bow, but there would have been a 3-4 week wait, so I returned it to bass pro.(who knows nothing about traditional bows by the way) Stick to the best when buying a bow.........3Rivers and trust me, they have the best customer service in traditional bows and equip that you will find, Hands down. PS... I'm saving up for a tomahawk longbow....

Comments about Bear 64" Montana Longbow:

I ordered a 40# Montana after a lot of research. So far I am very happy with it. My only concern is that the brace height was nearly 9" at first. It is now 8 5/8" after several hundred shots, leaving it strung overnight a couple of times and untwisting the string some. I'm not sure if there is normal variance in the bow and/or string. I am planning to try another string to see if I can get it in the recommended 7.5-8.5 range. I have a 29.5 draw and have not noticed stacking- but I have limited experience with other bows. It has been very fun getting back into archery after a long (50 year) layoff.

A beauty from Bear Archery. Classic clean lines, a real pleasure to shoot with no hand shock. Reasonably priced for a quality entry level longbow.

            Service and delivery comments:

Superb service from Three Rivers, kept me informed of the process right up to delivery.

Comments about Bear 64" Montana Longbow:

This is my second Bear bow. Compared to my Super Kodiak this one is much more difficult to draw and feels a lot heavier than 50# (both my bows are listed at 50# so there is a good comparison). Overall I do love this bow, the bow itself is well made and attractive and is definitely more powerful than the Kodiak. The draw is smooth, but the Super Kodiak recurve is noticeably smoother. All that said, I can shoot this bow better than the Super Kodiak, and it points more naturally with the straighter grip than the contoured grip of the Super Kodiak.

My "CON" listed as poor construction is not meant for the bow, its for the cheap grip wrap and thin shelf and strike plate material that Bear used on the bow, the material is a double stick backed leather-ish wrap. I have already pulled both off and (unfortunately) right now I am shooting without a grip wrap but did cut and install a bear hair shelf and a better strike plate on the bow (both spares I had for the Super Kodiak). I would far prefer the grip that is on the Tomahawk series that is stitched on the front and not just a tape wrap.

Overall I give the bow 5 stars, the leather grip wrap 2. I went with 4 stars only because of the grip material and construction.

Comments about Bear 64" Montana Longbow:

I'm pretty much a beginner. I started with a Martin Jaguar recurve and decided that I wanted to change to longbow. I wasn't ready to commit a lot of money but saw some great reviews of the Montana. It is great, feels good to shoot, easier to draw than the Jaguar even though it has a slightly heavier draw. I had read that longbows tend to be noisier than recurves but the Montana is practically silent even at maximum brace height. I don't have a lot of experience to compare it to, but I really like this bow.

Also it is very durable, UPS mangled the box the bow was in pretty good (the bow was hanging out the end when I picked it up). The staff at 3Rivers talked me through making sure it hadn't been damaged and it is still in perfect condition. The construction was solid.

the Montana is gonna be hard to beat just like the grizzly. can't get a better bow for the money. 7-5/8 is the brace that mine likes no shock and whisper quiet. even better than some of the big $ bows I have had.

Comments about Bear 64" Montana Longbow:

A Beginner Plus and only shoot at a round target backed by straw bales. I started with an entry level takedown recurve and wanted to upgrade to a "real" one-piece longbow; one I would be proud to own and would allow me to continue improving. Without going to the $800-1,000 bow, this was an affordable compromise and I am very pleased. Before buying I was concerned that the grip looked to be just a big block of wood that would overwhelm my relatively small hand. However, it fits perfectly. I do feel a little hand shock, but think it may be that I am not used to it yet. If you want a reasonably priced "real" bow, this is the ticket. I would recommend it to anyone.

                        Service and delivery comments:

Exceptionally fast delivery, perfect condition. All my questions I had before buying were cheerfully and honestly answered. Great company.
