They are heavy all right. 650-680 grain, with a 11/32 shaft. Applied with wood screw adaptor, they can kill elephants. You need a good bow which can handle the weight. I shoot a 50# Black Griffon, from Border Bows in Scotland. They work well.

These are really nice shafts that are tough and have really good weight. The down side is keeping them straight. Changes in temperature and humidity affect them very drasticly making them a poor choice for hunting. I took them on one hunt and checked each of the shafts I would carry for straightness before going to my stand prior to each hunt. Once in the stand you could visably see that the shafts had started to revert back and were no longer straight. I'm glad I carried some carbon arrow with me or my hunt would have been a total loss.

Tapering the shafts

        I had a hard time getting a decent taper on the ends for nocks and points with conventional hand held sharpening tools. I have tried the $5.00 hand held pencil type sharpner as well as a more expensive $35.00 hand held sharpner. Both ripped and gouged the ends, probably due to the laminations. About the only way I found to get a decent taper is with a disk sander or by hand sanding. Once I get them tappered they should make excellent arrows, but they are not easy to taper.

          The laminated birch shafts are tough, durable and have more mass than the other standard un-laminated wood shafts. They take stains and finishes well and will stand-up to the toughest 3-D or stumping conditions.

          My comment is not directed twards the shafts but more the packaging. In the past 3rivers used heavy foam arrow dividers, which were excellent. Now the dividers are very flimsy and it caused the arrows to contact each other while in shipping.
