I know its hard to find quality cedar these days, the grain on the last doz was not as tight as I would like to see. they were also very light, excellent for 3d shooting which is what I built them for. Too light for hunting. Good taper job. Spent some time hand straightening (thats normal).

Comments about Tapered Port Orford Cedar Wood Shafts:

I HAVE CARBON,ALUMINUM,AND WOOD ARROWS.THEY ARE ALL EXCELLENT.HOWEVER LETS TALK WOOD.
LATELY I'VE BEEN HAVING A RIOT WITH A ENGLISH LONGBOW NAMED"BANDIT" USED IN THE SPIRIT OF THE BANDITS OF SHERWOOD.BANDIT WAS A STAVE I BOUGHT FROM 3 RIVERS AND FINISHED MYSELF. THIS BOW IS WOOD AND BAMBOO.IS PRIMITIVE AND IT IS FITTING TO USE WOOD ARROWS.
I FIND WOOD ARROWS VERY RESILIENT.THEY PARADOX AROUND A LONG BOW EXTREMELY WELL.
WOOD ARROWS ARE TOUGH.THEY TAKE A BETTER SIDE GLANCE THAN CARBON ARROWS.THEY DON'T BEND LIKE ALUMINUM.
USUALLY MINE BREAK THE POINT OFF WHEN I HIT A STONE IN THE GROUND.SIMPLY REFIT A NEW POINT.IT MAKES THAT ARROW 1/2 INCH SHORTER.BIG DEAL IT'S STILL A GOOD ARROW.I'VE BEEN SHOOTING THIS GROUP OF ARROWS FOR APPROXIMATELY SEVEN THOUSAND SHOTS AND STILL GOING.I KEEP A JOURNAL SO I KNOW THIS.
THERE IS A GREAT PREDJUDICE THAT MODERN IS BETTER.IT SIMPLY IS NOT TRUE.IT TOOK ME A LONG TIME REALIZE SIMPLICITY IS GENIOUS AND STUPIDITY IS COMPLICATION.
SPLINES ON THESE ARROWS ARE CLOSE.I TEST MINE WITH THE GRAIN AND ACROSS THE GRAIN.I GET DIFFERENT READINGS.SPLINE IS JUST A APPROXIMATION SO GET IT IN THE 5 LB RANGE AND IT'S GOOD.
ALWAYS PUT THE NOCK LINED UP TO THE GRAIN THE SAME WAY ON EACH ARROW.
    GLUES ADHERE TO WOOD WELL.
    BOTTOM LINE
    WOOD IS GOOD.
    HAVE FUN
    GARE

Comments about Tapered Port Orford Cedar Wood Shafts:

It took many days to remove the sap. When the arrows first arrived the whole group was stuck together and the sap had also gotten into the other items in the box. Needless to say I was quite disappointed to begin with. But once I cleaned everything up I was pleased with the product. I just don't know if I will try them again because of the mess I recieved.

Comments about Tapered Port Orford Cedar Wood Shafts:

I've made lots of wood arrows in the past but went to carbon a few years ago because I couldn't find shafts that were consistantly straight and had grain patterns that were consistant. These shafts may make me go back to woodies. They are absolutely beautiful! You will be very happy with them. Yes they are a little pricy, expecialy with the new price increase, but sometimes you have to pay to get quality.

Comments about Tapered Port Orford Cedar Wood Shafts:

These appear to be well crafted. What I did not like is that after sealing the shaft and cutting to desired length I realized I had a bit of an issue. I use a Tru-Center tool to shave the nock and point end. The 5/16 collet will not accept the taper that came on the shafts, as I need to touch up the nock end after sealing. I have never experienced this with other shafts that were pre-tapered. While this is no deal killer it forced me to use a 11/32 collet on a off size to trim up the nock cut, making an accurate cut more difficult. I am y be a tad hard on these but it truly created an issue that I never had to deal with in the past when buying pre-tapered shafts

Comments about Tapered Port Orford Cedar Wood Shafts:

I've bought two of these sets, one for my 50lb Longbow and one for my 40lb Mongol recurve. Spine strength is reasonably consistent, although some variance is unavoidable. These shafts are much straighter than any pre-made wood arrows I've bought, but they usually still take a little work with a shaft tamer to pass the roll test. This is probably unavoidable given what they must endure during shipping.

I don't want any plastic on my wood shafts, so I generally cut the nock tapers off and either cut in some reinforced self-nocks or use some horn inserts. Either one requires some specialized tools (a self nocking jig, or a good drill with a steady hand. I prefer a pure hand-driven drill for this work.)

I would advise getting shafts spined at least 5-10lb heavier than the draw weight of your target bow; if a shaft is on the high side of the spine rating, you can sand the reed sides (the two opposing sides with densely-packed grain lines) to reduce stiffness.

Comments about Tapered Port Orford Cedar Wood Shafts:

these shafts are everything I had hoped they would be. Matching very close in spine and weight. It took only a few extra dips in the poly to attain weight within 3 grains. I have hand planed all my arrows in the past 7 years and am very impressed with the quality and workmanship with these shafts, top notch in my book. It took very little work to straighten all 12 shafts to perfection. I wanted the best I could get for my Asbel class coming up in may and I believe that these are just that. Tip of my hat to 3 Rivers for supplying us with the best archery materials available.
