I understand the stain will be darker in the softer growth rings and lighter in the dense grain. I can understand and even appreciate that effect.

But this stain was splotchy regardless of growth rings. Stain was shaken and thoroughly mixed. Shafts were cleaned first with lacquer thinner and I first tried toweling the stain, letting it soak for about a minute, then wiping with clean cloth. Poor results. Results improved a little when I hand dipped each shaft and let soak 3-4 minutes then wiped, but still less than acceptable.

Instructional sheet recommended alcohol based stain, but that information came only in the shipment--not on the website at time of order. I asked questions before I tried to apply it and the replies that came in gave the oil based stain a thumbs up saying it would be fine. It wasn't.

Very good product. I order the grey and at first didn't like the color but after two coats and letting it dry it grew on me. As far as the stain itself I loved it. Coated evenly and penetrates the wood. Next time probably will try a different color just for fun. 3R had great service!

Bought with 2 dozen arrows and they look much better than my last ones that i didn't stain. I love the greybark! Easy to apply too. Just be sure to wipe off excess. Left too much on a couple arrows and they lost their rings.

I have the greybark stain and quite frankly, I'm impressed with the look of this stain. I put the same dozen arrows through my bow about 20ish times now and virtually no wear marks or discoloration. Very good product. I will probably try the other two colors shortly.

I used the Sunset Cedar. It penatrates very well, Used Bohning Blue-Clear sealer,and was compatable. Make sure you prep shafts with 500 grit sand paper or 0000 Steal Wool, I used rubber gloves on both hands,then put a cheap $2 glove liner on one hand. Dipped my index finger to the first nuckle and then rubbed together with thumb. Started at middle of shaft to one end, turn a quarter turn and repeat.Turn around and do same to other side.Then wipe dry with napkin.Re-dip finger and repeat on other arrows. Let dry for a day, then sand smooth 0000 Steal Wool. Avoid putting to much by rubbing back and forth, as it can get too dark and is dificult to correct. 0000 Steal Wool also works great inbetween coats of sealer. This way worked for me, have fun with it.

I couldn't find a "greybark" color among hardware store stains so I sprung for 3Rivers' product...I chose the oil-based because I wanted to stain and seal in one product...a few shakes and rubbed-on my Port Orford Cedar shafts (after hand-straightening them), and they dried quickly with excellent results! The deep finish after one application allowed the wood grain to show through as I desired, and a light sanding with very-fine sponge removed the bit of sap from the shaft (I could have done that first but it still worked fine). Terrific, one-step product!
