Comments about Heat Tempered Bamboo Arrow Shafts 6-pack:

Had one of these splinter before I could mount the inserts.
They are fun to shoot, but require some work to get them field ready.

The ends are difficult to get aligned with the inserts, or if you don't use an insert it's hard to get field points to fit due to the narrow shaft.

Over all- OK as long as you are prepared to experiment and invest some time.

Comments about Heat Tempered Bamboo Arrow Shafts 6-pack:

I have been using river cane shading since I was a kid and it can be difficult to get the shafts to match up(good consistency )so to get a half dozen matched shafts already straightened and tempered is a blessing. These shafts are a great match for a Mongol or Chinese bow for use as either hunting or target arrows. The only real disadvantage to these shafts is getting tips for them.

Comments about Heat Tempered Bamboo Arrow Shafts 6-pack:

I'm just now preparing to make my own arrows after I got tired of expensive e or relatively poor quality pre-made shafts. I've shot pre-made bamboo before, but this would be my first time making them.

These shafts are definitely straighter than the pre-made shafts I've been using. There's limits to how much they can be straightened, I suspect, but they're still quite satisfactory. Knowing the semi-hollow nature of the shafts, I'd be hesitant to use any kind of compression tool to straighten them for fear of severely weakening the shaft.

As far as nocks go, self nocks are possible in bamboo, but I wouldn't recommend them--on my pre-made shafts, the self nocks got thoroughly destroyed every time I Robin-hooded an arrow. The horn nocks sold here seem to fit nicely if you take the time to hand-file the soft core of the bamboo. I've also heard of bush clover being used for nock inserts (lespedeza bicolor)--I suppose I'll see how they do once I've grown some around my yard.

The great thing about these shafts is their strength, but the one problem with this pack is the consistency. They generally weigh about the same as the tapered 55# cedar shafts sold here at 3rivers, and their spine strength falls within 65-90#, a minimum of 10# stronger. Given that much variance in strength, though, you'd have to buy several dozen to get a decent-sized matching set.

Comments about Heat Tempered Bamboo Arrow Shafts 6-pack:

With these shafts the hard work of straightening and heat tempering is done. I have used them to produce two sets of Mongolian style arrows. One set uses hand forged blade points with tangs, the other uses modbod style target points. If you are producing handmade arrows for use with "horse bows" or Asian bows these are the shafts you want to start with. Remember that these are a natural product and they have variation and inconsistancies, but this was the way it was for the Asian and steppe people who used them long ago. I used horn nocks from 3R inserted into the tails (bamboo has a natural taper so be sure to insert your nocks into the larger, "base" end. Once nocks and points were inserted, fletches were glued on. It is important to get stem alignment correct with nock slots. Finally the point base, leading edge of fletches and nock ends where wrapped. I used silk thread on one set and silk 2mm ribbon on the other. They were then coated with a clear varnish to consolidate the wrapping. These shafts are a little too short to use for Kyudo arrows. Longer shafts would be a welcome addition since bamboo Ya, at least for my length, are longer to start with and have gotten very expensive over the years.

Comments about Heat Tempered Bamboo Arrow Shafts 6-pack:

Shooting a bamboo shaft off a recurve bow for the first time was a revelation. The sound these dense arrows make upon impact is both awe-inspiring and satisfying. I find that they shoot well off any bow pulling 50 or more lbs. However, because the weights and diameters vary considerably, my advice is to obtain enough shafts to be able to form consistent arrow groups. I think every serious archer should have this experience.

Comments about Heat Tempered Bamboo Arrow Shafts 6-pack:

I have been making and using bamboo arrows for several years. Bamboo has a different feel and structure than cedar or ash arrows. Remember first of all it is hollow! I began making my own arrows for Kyudo(Japanese archery) which I've studied since 1984. I've been making Mongolian, and Chinese style arrows using bamboo for two years. Each shaft is unique and requires careful reeming to fit tanged points and nocks. I use horn nocks that are inserted into the tail. Points, fletches and nocks are whipped with silk thread and laquered to provide a nice finish, strenghten the ends and to consolidate the whipping. Bamboo needs to be oiled periodically; I have used Olive (recommended when I studied Kyudo) and Walnut oil. but have heard that Cammelia (tea seed) oil is also popular. Make sure it is high quality whichever you choose, and use a light coating. If you use them for target practice you need to exercise a little extra care when removing them...grip close to the point end and pull straight out, that will reduce the risk of breaking or cracking as you pull it out.
