Comments about Hickory Backed Tri-Lam English Longbow:

I wanted to provide an idea of the overall accuracy of this bow for SCA events after modification and adjustment. The attached photo shows the performance of the bow after multiple shooting sessions (~1000 shots) at 25 yards. My bow is tuned to 55 lbs at 28.5 inch draw length, and brace height of 5.5 inches. The bow was reinforced with natural rawhide lace and leather. I use three types of wooden arrows, two with 1 and 3 inch bodkin tip (145 and 155 grain) and one with 125 grain field types. The photo shown is using 125 grain field tip, 55 lbs spin wooden arrows with turkey feathers. No hand shock. This bow can consistently hit the 9 and 10 ring with no problems. Ensure you use PROPERLY spine weighted WOODEN arrows in the 55 lbs range. DO NOT use carbon fiber or steel as some type of makeshift substitute from compound bows, as this effects the performance of the archers paradox and will cause inaccuracies at minimum and give a person the incentive to overdraw and potentially break the bow.

Comments about Hickory Backed Tri-Lam English Longbow:

I have been using this English longbow now for several months, and have been impressed with its performance. If you are not familiar with English longbow construction, the quality of this bow is generally historically accurate and actually during the medieval period (1400-1500) a laminate style longbow was quite expensive to make. The difference between this an a self-bow made exclusively out of a single Yew stave is COST (particularly today). Although Yew performs better naturally than any other single wood, the tri-laminate bow bridges this gap, similar to early horse-bows and crossbows. After settling in the bow in with the included Flemish twist string (which also is very good quality) the bow offers consistent and reliable performance at multiple ranges. I continue to see strong performance at 25,50, and 75 yards. At 100 yards, drop off is significant, and power becomes weakened in respect to target penetration. This is not designed as a hunting bow, except for small game at close range as it lacks the "punch" that is most common with modern compound bows. For medieval SCA events, it is nearly perfect. However, be prepared for some tweaking and modification (rawhide backing, leather reinforcement, etc.) to get everything properly prepared. Additionally, if this is your FIRST English longbow, I recommended getting some a bit cheaper such as Mongol horse-bow because without experience it is possible that you will break the bow by going beyond the recommended draw length, which clearly is no more than 29 inches. My personal bow is listed at #52 at 28 inches by the manufacturer.
