      Yes when you soak the back sinew in hid glue or water and let it dry it will shrink.

    how many of these dose it take to back a 70" bow and are there some woods that should not be sinew backed

      There are some types of wood, mostly softwoods, that should not be made into bows even with backing, because they are likely to break. Examples: Pine, cedar, fir, poplar, etc

      We recommend using the Leg Sinew http://www.3riversarchery.com/Bow+Building+Backings+%26+Lumber++Leg+Sinew_c49_s130_p0_i4311_product.html for bow backing as can get more quantity out of the Leg sinew. I would recommend using 6-8 packs for an average bow. Better to go with the 8 as you do not want to run out. I am not familiar with any wood that can not be sinew backed.
