I don't know whether tape would work with carbon shafts and vanes; I have used it only with wood shafts and feathers. But I don't know any reason why it wouldn't work.
      Good Luck!

  • Q:

Do you have to keep it in the jig to let it dry after applying like when using glue?
    Asked on 5/11/2014 by Matt

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

No you do not have to leave this in the Jig to dry. Once you place this on the feather and then peel off the backing. put the feather on the shaft, press down and you are ready to put the next feather on. After you have all feathers on I would recommend to put a dot of glue on the front and back of the feather to keep it from lifting up.

This is close to 3/32 and is a perfect fit on a feathers quill.

As far as I can tell, about two millimeters . . . comparable to the width of a fletching quill.

  • Q:

What type of glue would you recommend to use for the ends after applying the tape? and is it necessary for a strong hold?

I use a drop of super glue on the ends of the fletching

    • A:

I use Fletch-It because it is clearly explained that it works on carbon, wood, and aluminum shafts. You could use a variety of glues as long as it is compatible with your shaft material. I put a dab of Fletch-It on the front and back of each fletching to strengthen it in the event that it deflects off a target or other object. The tape works very well, I have had the fletchings rip apart before the tape looses its adhesive strength.
Is it necessary, for targets it is not to critical, but for the price of the glue and the fact that you are using a minimal amount (less than a drop) for each fletching, you gain that extra amount of "toughness."
When you apply it, do not use a full drop of glue, it will run around the shaft and run along the fletching due to surface tension, it really only takes little bit. Squeeze the glue container until you see the glue starting to bulge out of the tip and then just dab the ends of the fletchings. Hope this helps.

You can use about any glue at the ends to keep the feather down Fletch Tite works great to.

I use Duco cement. It's more to hold down the sharp point on the leading edge of the feather.

  • Q:

I bought these tape and I am having a hard time applying it on the cedar shafts I bought on 3river. It would just slip off.

The tape works well on my bamboo shafts but the cedar seems to not liking it. Anyone else have this issue or how to treat the cedar so it would stick?

What kind of clear coat or sealer are you using? The fletch tape works on pretty much every sealer out there.

I just bought this product and am having trouble removing the red liner tape after putting it onto the quill of the feather while in the clamp. How do you "start it" so that you can pull it off?

I use a razer knife to start peeling the red backing up.

      A:

I have problems removing the liner tape, too. As I recall, the tape instructions tell us to trim the tape a bit long, then bend the excess down to break the liner loose. I don't have room to do that with my Arizona E-Z Fletch jig., so usually I use an X-Acto knife to pick the liner up from the adhesive. A magnifier helps to see what I'm doing. I don't know if that description is clear, but it works for me.
      Good luck!

Bohning Fletching Tape appears to be relatively cost effective. Does it have a shelf-life like Fletch-tite or Fletch-tite Platinum?

As long as the tape is sealed it should be good indefinitely. I have not come across any in this condition that have been unusable. Once the package is opened the tape should be used with in about a year to make sure that the adhesive will be used to maximum effect.
