With my experience using this rawhide I have notice that when I installed it on a bow that was completed that it did add close to 5 lbs. to the draw weight. As far as slowing the bow down after I reduced weight and retillered it I noticed no difference with the arrow cast or speed.

I haven't noticed that this product slows down my limbs. I have used them on 3-4 different bows now and it works great. I will continue to use this product.

Yes, this would work as a backing to help keep the bow from breaking.

  • Q:

How much draw weight will the rawhide add to my bow?
Asked on 3/3/2012 by Longbowbob from New Hampshire

      A:

The rawhide will add very little if any weight to the bow. Rawhide is used to protect the back of the bow from breaking.

    • A:

primitive peoples also used it to create a smooth surface so they could paint broken up designs on the backs of the bow. i commonly use it when i build my horn and sinew composite bows.

  • Q:

I noticed that there is a smooth side an a coarse side. Do I glue the coarse side next to the wood?

      A:

Yes you will want to glue the coarse side to the bow. This will allow the glue to better hold the rawhide and wood together.

  • Q:

Do you clamp the rawhide to the bow in any way or just let it sit on the bow?
Asked on 2/27/2012 by Longbowbob from New Hampshire

      A:

Use Titebond 3 as the adhesive. You will need to soak the rawhide in room temperature water to make it more pliable. After the rawhide is pliable, remove excess water with a dry towel. Lay the rawhide onto the bow and restrain it with an ace bandage.

  • Q:

I am going to back a hickory bow with rawhide purchased from 3rivers. The rawhide is stiff like a dog bone. I soaked it in warm water and it softened up nicely. I let it dry and it went stiff again. Will it be that stiff on the bow? Is it supposed to be or am i supposed to treat it somehow to keep it pliable?

      A:

You need to let soak in luke warm water to soften it up so that you can glue to the bow. After you get it glued to the bow you let it dry and stiffen up and then you seal over it.

  • Q:

How thick is the finished rawhide? Can it be sanded thiner?, Does it dry transperant?
Asked on 3/1/2011 by No nodes from Corning NY

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

It will not have a constant thickness like fiber glass wood. This a natural product that has a semi-solid nature. It is hard to keep it exact all the way through.
