Q: is this stave already reduced to one growth ring. or will I need to back it? Or work to a single ring? Asked on 4/2/2013 by indianabushcrafter from Columbus, IN Know the answer? Answer this question 1 answer A: Not all of the staves will be the same. You should not need to back any of them unless something goes wrong in the tillering process. Q: To finish this bow, do I need to steam it put it in a form for reflex? Can I just tiller it and finish the grip? Im not supposed to remove wood from the back. Can I sand it lightly without hurting it? Asked on 4/26/2012 by Anonymous from Harveyville, KS Know the answer? Answer this question 1 answer A: You can steam and add some reflex/deflex if you want, but most of the work will be tillering. You will need to remove some material from the belly of the bow to get the weight down and to make sure that the limbs are bending correctly. You should be able to sand it lightly on the back, you just want to make sure that you do not take off too much material. Answered on 4/26/2012 by Justin from 3Rivers Archery
Q: During the tillering process, how do I know when to string it and test it for poundage? I don't want to snap it if its too thick and I don't want to till it too far so its weak either. Asked on 4/25/2012 by Goin' primitive from Central Falls, RI Know the answer? Answer this question 1 answer A: You will just need to keep checking the bow. If you go to string it and it is too difficult then you will need to keep taking material off. As long as you are checking it periodically you should not take it too far. If you do take off too much material, you can shorten the bow to increase the weight. Answered on 4/26/2012 by Justin from 3Rivers Archery

Q: This would be my first real bow building project, what supplies would i kneed to do this project? also would "boyers bible vol. 3" help me make this bow? Asked on 2/8/2012 by Anonymous from awesometown Know the answer? Answer this question 1 answer A: Yes, any of the Bowyer's Bibles will help with making this bow. I also recommend the Rattlestick by Gary Davis. It has a lot of good information on self bows. The tools needed will vary with how you want to complete the bow. I recommend getting a book or DVD first and then deciding on the tools afterwords. Answered on 2/9/2012 by Justin from 3Rivers Archery
Q: One of the 3 rivers employees just told me that I cannot cut a shelf into this kit because of the backing. This bow is not backed, it is just a piece of Hickory. One employee in the answer column said that you can cut a shelf into this bow. I have been using 3 Rivers for all of my archery needs, but I am getting Very frustrated. All I want is one simple answer, Can I cut a shelf into this Bow?? Asked on 1/19/2012 by Anonymous Know the answer? Answer this question 2 answers A: I have built a small number of bows out of various woods and I have never cut a shelf into a perfectly symetrical piece of wood. What I do is to fashion the leather handle in such a way as to include a shelf in the leather itself. Not perfect, I know but a lot less destructive too. Why would you cut into a piece of wood that is so dependent on structural integrity anyway? Answered on 1/18/2013 by Toby Tanner from Corpus Christi Texas by God A: The bow does not have a backing, but if you cut into the back of the bow it will weaken the structural integrity of the bow. If you would like to have a shelf on the bow, build out from the bow grip. Some examples are gluing another piece of wood to the bow, or a popular method is folding over the top part of the leather grip to create a bump for the arrow to rest on. As for where to place the shelf, you want to find the center of the bow and go about an inch up. The reason is your hand should grip the bow right in the center and you want the arrow resting right above. I would still recommend wearing a glove on the bow hand to make sure the arrow's feathers do not cut you if they are on your knuckle. The answer of being able to cut into the bow will be removed shortly. Answered on 1/19/2012 by Johnathan Karch from 3Rivers Archery
