No, this glue does not have a noticeable performance value.

  • Q:

I would like to make a long bow. I would rather not wanna make a heat box, keep cost down as this is my first go round with laminate bow making. I just wanna do clamp's, and mulitple hour cure. Would EA-40 be a good glue? If so what would be the best mix ratio. What woods would you not recomend, when not using heat cureing?

      A:

I would recommend to use a hot box when gluing up a bow. When you cure the EA-40 at 160 degrees the glue will with stand 160 degrees.

  • Q:

(1)How many bows can you build with 2 one-pint cans?
    (2)What is the shelf life?

      A:

Depending on the size of the bow you should be able to get at least 3 or 4 bows from one set.

It will only last for about a year after opening the cans. If it is still sealed you should be fine.

  • Q:

Should you rough up the wood before applying? I guess you would not if it was clear fiberglass but what about wood to wood or wood to bamboo?

    • A:

Yes, rough up the wood. The only failures I've ever had using EA-40 came when I was trying to get the smoothest veneers possible. Stress cracks between the veneer and glass began immediately on stringing up the bow.

      A:

You should not need to rough up the wood. You will want to clean everything, even the glass, with acetone first. Then use a tongue depressor to make sure that you get the glue into every pore and groove of the wood and glass.

  • Q:

How does this compare to bow-grip?

      A:

I have only ever used Smooth On myself. From what I have read Smooth On tends to be more stable and more forgiving than Bow Grip.

  • Q:

Can I stain my bow I am making with either Minwax or TruOil, then apply the EA40 to adhere a clear fiberglass backing? If so, what, if any, prep is necessary to take out the oily or waxiness of the stain prior to EA40 application. In other words, will the stain or oil make it too greasy for the EA40 to adhere to it? I don't want my laminate slipping off the back of my bow. First build here. It is a longbow from a red oak board and I would like a fiberglass backing to be safe. Too much work to risk breakage.

      A:

I would not recommend to Tru oil the bow before you install fiberglass with EA-40 because it will not adhere. You could use a flat cabinet scraper to remove this from the bow. once removed you will want to use a clean rag and denatured alcohol to wipe it clean. Once this is done you can then glue the fiberglass on.

  • Q:

Does this glue work for sinew-backing a bow? If not, what would be better?
Asked on 6/20/2012 by Juniper bowmaker

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

We do not recommend using the EA-40. What we use is hide that will be the best glue to use on sinew back bow's.
