  • Q:

Are these risers strong enough to be used in a R/D longbow pulling 55 pounds or does the riser need to be laminated from diffent pieces of wood.

      A:

These risers will work for a 55# R/D longbow. Depending on how much reflex that you are going to put into the bow you may need to radius the back of the riser to fit your form since it is currently flat.

hello three rivers, is the riser back curved for a r/d or is it flat for a flat bow. thank you, tim.

      A:

The longbow risers are straight cut, they have no curve to them.

    • A:

These risers are flat. If you are looking to make a R/D bow, you will have to use these risers and bend the limbs in a way that does not change the center section too much, although the fade out ends are flexible to some degree.

  • Q:

I have a wooden stave that is 64" long. I wan to make a longbow out of it. It is of red oak. how do I add the arrow rest to it. Is it necessary to have a riser to develop the arrow sight. It is just a stave and has been tillered nothing else has been done. I was thinking of adding backing to it either fibre glass or bamboo is that a good idea

As it sounds like you do not have a lot of material in the riser to risk cutting into I would suggest building a shelf out from the handle section. You can do this by wrapping leather over a bump of just about anything you want to represent your shelf (could be just a smaller piece of leather. You can also shoot off your knuckle using it as a shelf. I would recommend getting a bow glove: http://www.3riversarchery.com/SCA%2DMedieval+SCA+Gloves+%26+Tabs++Hawkwood+Bowglove_c53_s252_p0_i4002X_product.html

Backing a bow is a great idea and Bamboo is a very popular choice. It adds speed and durability to just about any bow.
