Q: I received a piece of hickory backing that had a lot of grain run off. Is this going to affect the bow? I thought it might increase the chance of lifting a splinter. I am unsure if strait grain is necessary for backing. Asked on 7/16/2012 by RESI from florida Know the answer? Answer this question 1 answer A: As a backing it should not be a problem. Grain run off is going to be more of a problem on a self bow or board bow where no backing is used. Answered on 7/19/2012 by Justin from 3Rivers Archery

Q: hi 15 and im in the process of making a ceder bow, i was wondering if i would have to back the bow in order to make it last? with a couple coating of polyurethane work? if not what is the best way to back this bow i am making? and how? thamks Asked on 2/12/2012 by donny Know the answer? Answer this question 1 answer A: Backing the bow will make it last longer. Using a clear coat is something entirely different than backing the bow. For the backing you will want to use linen, bamboo, or something similar. Typically it would be put on with Titebond III or another hide glue. Answered on 2/16/2012 by Justin from 3Rivers Archery

Q: just wondering, what do you have to do to the backings(taper, round off, etc) before the it is ready to be applied to the bow? Asked on 1/18/2011 by Anonymous Know the answer? Answer this question 1 answer A: The first step in applying backing is making sure that the back of the bow is as flat as possible. Once you have flattened the back of the bow now apply the backing with Urac-185 or Titebond lll and clamp the backing on making sure that you have even pressure with clamps on the backing. Once you have glued the backing on now you need to cut it to the bows profile, the best way to do this is with a belt sander or a band saw. Answered on 1/27/2011 by Art from 3Rivers Archery
