  • Q:

The picture makes the brace height hard to judge. What is the recommended brace for a standard 28" draw?

Your draw length has nothing to do with the brace height. The brace height has to do with where the string lies on your limbs. You should have the string where it is laying in the string groves and not much past that. I like to set my brace height around 7.75 for most of my bows.

  • Q:

Well this question is not about a bear kodiak but not this one. My father just gave me his old 1966 Bear Kodiak. The bow itself is in awesome shape but it does not have a string. What kind of string does this bow take? I am new the the trad archery and any help would be great. Thanks.

You will need to use a string that is made out of either B50 or Darcon. The string will also need to be 4" shorter than the length of the bow. The length measurement should be located just below the grip or on the bottom limb.

      A:

I would recommend the B-50 Dacron double loop standard string that sells for about $7. This is the older, heavier fiber for vintage bows. It will stretch with new use, so adding twist to it for about a week will be necessary. I would start by adding twists until the distance between the string and the inner most part of the grip is about 8 inches. Research 'brace height' for this model. The length of the string will need to be 4" shorter than the indicated AMO bow length. Be careful, some stores measure it two ways, actual and AMO lengths. For a 60" bow you'd need an actual length 56" string, or the same string could be sold as "AMO 60". Make sure you know which designation the store uses. You will also need a good bow stringer. I like the Limbsaver by Selway. You can always upgrade your string to Flemish, but I use these basic strings on all my 20+ vintage bows and they work great. Happy shooting!

  • Q:

Hello, how far past center is the shelf cut?

      A:

Bear Archery advertises the bow as cut-past center, but I am not exactly sure how far past center it is cut. I would estimate 1/8" past center, as that is a popular length for bowyers. It will vary slightly from bow to bow as they are hand-sanded before the finishing process.

I was thinking the sight window is cut to center, but the shelf radius appears at least .25 inches forward. Now that you mention it, I would like to know even though it would not change how accurately I shoot it.

My 40# bow appears to be cut to center, but I would be interested to see what the techs at 3 Rivers have to say.
