  • Q:

I have a straight indexer and have been using a left wing clamp. When I wanted to buy a Right Wing Clamp there is a message stating that it requires a new indexer. Why do I need a new indexer? Have things changed? My Bitzenburger is 50 years old.

    Please advise

Look on the Bitzenburger web site for guidance about which indexer you need.. Straight indexer works for left and right (preferred by tradtional archers) according to the reference. R with R or L with L for compound shooters. The fellow I talked with is the one that drills the index holes and he said it can be personal preference depending on how feathers/vanes clear the rest.

You don't have to change your indexer the feather will not be perfectly alined with the nock. This is a professional jig so to make perfect arrows you need the different indexers.

      A:

Hello: I recently purchased a Straight Clamp. I originally bought the Bitzenburger Fletcher with a Right Wing Clamp. So, following 3Rs instructions I purchased another indexer and installed it in my fletcher. But I donot know for sure if I needed the new indexer. My advice is to buy the new clamp ( donot buy the new indexer) and try it. The worst thing that can happen is you must place another order for a new indexer.

I also have a 50 year old Bitzenberger as well as a new one.
The indexer from the new Bitz will not interchange with the 50 year old model.....
The clamps will however interchange, RW, LW or straight.

The left wing indexer will have a L on the flat, the right wing will have an R and the straight will be blank with no mark on the flat of the indexer.

Not marked is a straight, "L" for left and "R" for right

  • Q:

    a) Can both R and L indexers be used for straight fletching?

    b) Is using the corresponding R or L indexer for the R or L clamp important to have a cocck feather facing away from the bow window?

    c) How does the orientation of the R or L parabolic feathers determine: front part (towards the point), rear part (towards the nock) or middle of the feather?

      A:

      a) Both the R and L indexers can be used for a straight fletch. The indexer will just change the offset of the feather.
      b) The indexer will give you the proper offset for the clamp. If you use the opposite indexer it will offset the feather to the opposite side. I have heard of this being done before but, I do not know how this would affect the performance of the arrow at all.
      c) They will follow the helical of the clamp. The different helicals are designed to cooperate with the natural twist of the feather.

  • Q:

Which if any of the indexers will place the odd vain up instead of to the side

    • A:

According to Bitzenburger web site, the "TM" indexer positions the odd feather (or hen feather) either up or down. "TM" indexers are R, L or Straight (unmarked); based on what they show on the web.

      A:

None of the indexers allow that option. If you had a friction fit nock or a uni-bushing nock you could rotate it until the feather is in the desired position.
