  • Q:

Along with the Oil Based Stain I received the Gasket Lacquer yesterday. In the shipment was a flyer recommending alcohol based Stain. Have I erred? Will this Oil Based product be a problem with the G lacquer? This is my first rodeo with wooden shafts...Don't want problemos.

      A:

The oil based stain is perfectly fine to use with the gasket lacquer. The biggest thing you will need to double check is that the stain is completely dry before using the gasket lacquer. If the stain is not completely dry it can run into the gasket lacquer when you dip the shafts.

Hasn't been a problem so far. I'm still pretty new at this, but I stained two dozen cedar shafts last week, and varnished them with four coats last night. They all look great.

I haven't used Thunderbird polyurethane sealer, but I think if you let the
      shafts dry thoroughly before applying,
      It should work fine.

  • Q:

Can you seal a shaft with tru oil after staining with this product?

      A:

Dont think that would work. I believe Tru-Oil from my research is a gun oil type solvent/stain. I would highly recommend the Gasket Lacquer over the oil based finish seen above from 3 rivers. It dries very quickly, goes on smoothly via the dip tube and gasket attachment. I was very happy with that product over the oil based finish. My arrows came out beautifully....

      A:

I recommend using a lacquer or polyurethane to seal the shafts. The Tru oil is meant to be more of a stain/sealant. It is not meant to be used to just seal the shafts.

  • Q:

What is the best way to apply this stain? This is my first try at building cedar arrows. Wipe it on or sponge? Do you need a dip tube for this or just for the gasket lacquer? Thanks,

      A:

You can wipe it on or use a dip tube. Both methods will work; the dip tube will be a little more efficient and less messy.

      A:

Yes, our 3R Oil based stain will work with our water based sealer. You must wait 24 hours after staining, and then wipe a rag over it to remove any residue, then you can seal it with our 3R Water Based Shaft Sealer.
