  • Q:

I am ordering the Lil Indian set for my 8 and 9 year old granddaughters. I want to order extra arrows. What length and type would you recommend? Thanks AN

      A:

I started my 11 year old daughter off on the 3 Rivers wooden children's
arrows and they worked fine. Length is based on their draw length. To
determine this, have them hold their arms straight our to the side, palms
forward and measure from one middle finger tip to the other across their
back. Divide this measurement by 2.5 for draw length. Get an arrow
      slightly longer than draw length.
I also suggest that you consider buying some 75 grain steel field points,
cutting the arrows just behind the points they come with, tapering them
(see tapering tool in 3Rivers catalog), and glue them on. The added weight
greatly stabilizes the arrow and it is a bit sharper so it sticks in the
target better. It is discouraging for a young kid to make a good shot only
to have it bounce off the target.

I would recommend the youth arrows here (item #4292x) in 26" length. They are good arrows at a good price.

I would like a dozen of these but I would like to know if you would change the tips. Comes with Crimped on bullet nose target points, but I want the more pointed tips.

      A:

The 3Rivers youth wood arrows are 5/16" wood shafting. The points attached are light points which make the arrow fly better. You could probably buy standard 5 degree tapered glue on points in 1/4" or 5/16" and replace the original points. You can try this and if the arrows don't fly well, you can purchase other wood shafts that are heavier spined. 3Rivers also sells those. Happy shooting!]

You can cut the tips off, taper them, and glue on field points. Make sure
you get fairly light weight points. Personally, I would recommend getting
the NASP Genesis arrows; aluminum, screw on points, much better quality,
heavier and more likely to stick in the target when fired from a low draw
weight bow by a kid. They can even be trimmed with a metal cut off blade ,
and points re- installed in shortened arrows. I have tried both, and the
NASP arrows are worth the price.

These fly best the way they are- I experimented with the set I bought using 125 and 100 grain field points... The crimped points perform amazing and the accuracy and uniformity of flight are terrific.

    Will these penetrate 3D targets.

The youth arrows work well with the youth bows.  They fly true and are well balanced.  On your standard 3D target and a 25lbs bow you should get about three inches of penetration at about 15 yards.  Hours of fun.

      A:

It really depends upon the type of 3D target and the poundage of the bow. The points on these arrows are more of a bullet nose point and do not have a sharp point at the end. We can cut and mount standard field points on these as well which will help them stick into the target.

The 3Rivers wood arrows will penetrate the 3-D targets if you are using around 30 lb. recurve or longbow. A 10 thru 20 lb bow might not penetrate a 3-D target. For those bows you might want to get fiberglass arrows or aluminum arrows.

they are really light weight; probably not if shot by a kid from a low draw
weight bow. they have target tips, not the sharper field tips. I upgraded
my kids to the aluminum NASP arrows; much better, and you can change tips
      easily.

Hi, I am replacing arrows that came with a child's bow.
They measure around 28" from tip to bottom, maybe 28 & 3/4". What size arrows would I buy, appropriate for my 12 year old son?

    Thank you!

Depending upon what her draw length is would choose which length to get. Most likely the 24" will be long enough for a 9 year old shooter.

A bow under 25# draw and arrows between 24" and 26" will suit most children until adolescence.

      A:

      D Walto,
The length of arrow would really be determined by your draw length
(distance from the string to the front of the bow when at full draw).
The best way to determine that is to get a bow and an overly long arrow,
draw it back to your anchor point, and have a friend mark the arrow. Do
this three to five times, average the length, add an inch or two, and order your arrows
based on that measurement. Here is a website that will explain how an why: http://www.3riversarchery.com/pdf/ArrowCharts.pdf. If you haven't already, I would also suggest getting her a couple of
books on shooting a traditional bow to help her develop good shooting technique right off the bat. The
book "Become the Arrow" by Byron Ferguson and DVD by the same name is a
      good place to start
      (http://www.amazon.com/Become-Arrow-Target-Byron-Ferguson/dp/091330509X/ref=sr_1_11?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1369973732&sr=1-11&keywords=traditional+archery).
Byron is legendary for being able to put an arrow through a wedding
ring at 30 yards with his longbow. Also "The Traditional Bowhunter's
Handbook" by T.J. Conrads has quite a bit of useful information for a
beginning traditional archer (not just bow hunter). I hope this helped out.

      A:

The length of the bow will not matter. The weight of the bow is what you want to look at. These arrows are recommended for 35# bows and below.
