  • Q:

What is the shelf life of :
    1. Unopened bottle
    2 Opened bottle

Best way to store it, and again: Unopened & opened bottles.

      A:

I do not have any information on an exact shelf life for Tru-Oil. As long as the bottle is stored with the cap on it should be fine until you use it all. I have never heard of it going bad before.

  • Q:

I recently bought a old beat up bear super grizzly that I have scrubbed all the finish off of. Would this work on the fiberglass and raw wood to seal it or would a poly spray work better on raw wood and fiberglass?

      A:

You will want to use a Poly spray on that bow. An oil finish works better for an all wood bow like a self bow or bamboo backed hickory for example.

  • Q:

I have an unfinished hickory longbow (one solid piece). If I use this product to finish, after applying snakeskins, could/should I then poly coat it for a stronger, more durable finish??

If you use the tru-oil to finish your bow you will not need to use another product. The tru-oil will be enough to protect your bow. Also another product may not be compatible with the tru-oil possibly causing it to be gooey and never dry.

The product is a great stain and can help weather proof a bow. The clear coat is going to do an even better job protecting the bow. i would recommend that you spray over the bow after you have stained it.

  • Q:

My wood selfbow has been spray painted and hand painted by oil based paints, will this be compatible with the paint on the bow?

      A:

That will take some testing to see if it will work. I can not say for sure it would work perfectly with the paint you already have on the bow.

  • Q:

I would like to use this to seal some wood arrow shafts. How many dozen arrows would this bottle be able to seal?

      A:

I personally sealed some shafting with Tru-Oil when making medieval arrows. I had plenty of it left after sealing a dozen with several coats. I would say you get 4 dozen or so, depending upon how many coats and if you have any waste. (Can get messy doing it by hand).

  • Q:

I was wondering if I can use it on my Bear Super Kodiak? There is already some type of finish on it. My bow is about 3 years old. Should I use the Tru-oil Wax instead?

      A:

It would be best to use a spray coat or to sand the entire bow clean of finish and reseal. Tru-Oil is a good bow finish, but if you brush it on a bow that is already sealed you most likely will see the two different coats.

I have a trilaminated traditional english longbow made of ipe, actionboo, and hickory. Will this be fine for my longbow or should I use paraffin oil on the longbow or something else, any recommendations, thank you.

Tru-Oil makes a great bow finish, and I have even used it as an arrow finish on some medieval arrows. Nice thing with Tru-Oil, you would only have to apply it one time and it will last for years to come.
