Comments about Brownell B-50 Bow String Material:

What I like about B-50 is that its cheap and its good. I know that Fast flight can offer improved performance but that doesn't take anything away from this material. If anything it starts to wear down if the string is not served.

Comments about Brownell B-50 Bow String Material:

Being new to making my own strings my biggest hurdle was getting use to the process and material. After 5 failures I finally learned how to do this, I can now make a string of the correct length the first time (usually). I also, bought and use the string jig, but also made my own. I find it better to add an extra inch to each end and weave a little longer. I suggest only one jig and then get use to it. It's very much an art to make a string.

Though I've been shooting and hunting for over 50 years I had never made a bowstring. I made my first
Flemish string with this B-50 in less than 45 minutes, serving and all! This string material is well waxed, twists well, and is low stretch. Every bow I own has a new string and this material is abrasion resistant and tough.

Comments about Brownell B-50 Bow String Material:

Twisted up a new string with it. Noticed a difference right away compared to my stock of older B-50. Brownell seems to be skimping on the wax coating on the string. Much harder to use compared with my older stuff. Didn't seem to want to stay together.

Comments about Brownell B-50 Bow String Material:

I bought this for my first string making attempt. So far seems to be good stuff,
Just two observations.
1: the 1" is a huge role. I now have life time supply of Blue and Red B-50
2: Avoid the red. The red dye goes goes everywhere. It gets on your hands and on the bow.

Other than that seems to be a good product for a decent price

By MattVerified Reviewer from Chicago, IL on 1/23/2010

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Brownell B-50 Bow String Material:

I've used several colors of the B50 before trying the red. The red color is NOT colorfast. Beware! It rubs into other colors and will rub off on your hands, shirt, your bow, anything it touches. Terrible stuff. I'm sending my spool back. The local archery shop owner confirmed that all the red B50 he's ever used is not colorfast either. All the other colors are fine though and I DO highly recommend them.

I've been making my own strings now for over five years, and B-50 prewaxed material makes it easier to do. It takes me less than an hour to make a string and they turn out awesome. And with all the color choices, you can match your bow or your arrows. The durability is great, I made a string this spring, shot every week till fall, on league night and hunted with it this season. Great product.

Pros:
Abrasion Resistant, Durable, Strong
Best Uses:
Longbows, Recurve Bows

Comments about Brownell B-50 Bow String Material:

Since my sampling is small (4 colors in pound quantities), so, I cannot fully judge these materials, but I do notice significant differences in material diameters and degree of lubricant between different colors. The white was particularly thin with little lubricant. This may be deliberate to preserve the bright white color, but this makes a significant problem when making twisted bow strings.

Comments about Brownell B-50 Bow String Material:

The making of Flemish strings is made very pleasant with the use of this stock. My advice is... if you use the "red" string, use a second color other than "white" for the second color. Red is difficult to keep from bleeding to a light string. It'd be better used with "black". The white ends up being more "pink". But... that's the nature of the beast with "red", no matter what material.

Comments about Brownell B-50 Bow String Material:

B-50 is what we use for our Flemish bowstrings on all the traditional and primitive bows we make and sell. We've had only two issues with it: 1. the red can 'bleed' onto the wood bows, and 2. the white and yellow don't seem to be waxed as well as the other colors. All in all, though, a great product, and highly recommended.

Comments about Brownell B-50 Bow String Material:

I haven't much to say. I made a string as soon as the product arrived. I do like the fact that it is already waxed. still have to wax the ends for the loops. there was some stretch but that is to be expected. Since this is my first time making strings I really do not know what to look for in regard to 'pros & cons'. But with that being said I, as a beginner, had no problem making a 14 strand, 2 bundle flemish string.

Comments about Brownell B-50 Bow String Material:

Brownell B-50 bow string is a good product! l'm pleased with its performance. lt does stretch but there's no reason for concern. Just string your bow like you'd normally would, brace it correctly and draw your bow about 30 to 50 times to get it broke in. Then just unstring your bow, take one end of the string off and give it a few twists to compensate for the stretch, put it back on and your good to go. All thats left to do is put your serving string on and your nock point and let them fly!

Comments about Brownell B-50 Bow String Material:

There is no signifcant advantage for wood bows using high performance "modern" string materials.I n the 50 pound midrange of draw weight You are looking at 5 feet per second less (based on the fact that the noisier HP stings require silencers. note D 97 even caused one of my recurves limbs to ring after the shot) and 3 pounds less kinetic energy. Less than 3/8s drop at 20 yards. Old bows and new bows designed for non stretch string will not suffer limb fiber degragdation from the constant shock at the finish of each arrow shot from the bow. B 50 is elastic and greatly minimizes the shock of the shot cycle. B 50 requires a couple sessions of 40 to 50 arrows to complete its stretch -- then will require only a tightening twist now and them. B 50 is a good value if You make Your own Flemish string it will cost about 50 CENTS! so keeping a couple of shot in back up strings is what I do. Custom string colors will enhance the bow appearance also. Maintain the performance of your bow use B 50.

Comments about Brownell B-50 Bow String Material:

I use this product on my selfbows, recurves, and longbow that are not rated for fast flight materials. I have been using it for 30+ years. My father used it when he had an archery shop in the late 60's early 70's. He taught me how to make endless loop strings, later I learned how to do the flemish twist. It works great for both.

As a novice into the world of primitve archery I have found that when I ask for advcie on where to obtain equipment I get diected to 3Rivers. Well I ordered B-50 string material In black & Blue trying to create my own colors. I made a Flemish String for my sons bow and it works great. The second string I made was a Tillering Sting. It really stands up to the heavy pulls. Can't wait until I make my bow, and use the B-50 for my own bow string.

Will work on any traditional bow ,stretches in quickly and stays put after it sets in, the brace height remains the same for a long time once achieved and is resistant to extreme temps, It is more forgiving than the modern less stretchable string material and I find thats important to the beginner and less experenced traditional archer for them to gain confidence in their ability and their bow.

Makes great Flemish spliced bowstrings. I let the strings strech over night on the bow. Sand mixing with the bowstring wax, in the nocks, will wear the string down. Just clean them when unstringing the bow.

Too much Stretch

Comments about Brownell B-50 Bow String Material:

Good for broad bows and long bows and as a tilling string. Comes on a decent sized spindle, especially good for making many strings. Yellow and brown look smashing together. Works great for flemish knots and timber hitches. Keep it waxed and it will keep looking good and not fraying out. Must stretch it out before serving and stringing the bow. It does stretch a few inches so you need to compensate if you use a jig.

Comments about Brownell B-50 Bow String Material:

ALL bows come with a limited number of shots in them. B-50 helps me to get them all. The speed in my equipment results from adjusting variables, at minimal cost to its overall integrity. In 50 plus years, it's never been a slight increase in speed that's been the focal point of my confidence as I blend into nature's realm...but it has often been the forgiving nature of my string.

Comments about Brownell B-50 Bow String Material:

I'm extremely pleased with this product. For the price, it absoluteley can't be beat. I build my own bows in the old style of Pope, Young, Thompson, and Hill. My bows have one purpose- great hunting. So, naturally, I build alot to make sure I have the best. It delivers great performance without requiring special nocks or thicker servings for my fingers like Fast Flight does, and all my hunting bows have strings of B-50. People speak of stretch coming from B-50, but I've found that if the string is well made, it won't stretch.

Comments about Brownell B-50 Bow String Material:

I am a traditional archer, I make my own bows, and have made many for friends and family. I have been an archer for more than fifty years. In the past I depended on commercial bowstrings, about ten years ago, I realized I could not buy a bowstring that had any lasting power, with research I started making my own strings. B-50 string is the string I stuck with, I tried many others, but nothing satisfied my needs like this. My family and friends think I am the bowstring factory, that's alright with me I love to make them, and the main thing is I know they will last. I am sorry, I don't have anything that I don't like.

Comments about Brownell B-50 Bow String Material:

During the past 50 years; (that's how long I've been an Archer;) I have found no Bow-String more consistant or suited for making Longbow or Recurve Strings. As long as I have shot bows, B50 has proven to be reliable in all-round performance;i.e. for wooden bows of all descriptioins and has never caused damage to any of my bows; this contrary to other brands claiming the same properties as B50. B50 is available in most countries around the globe. That's why most serious Archers, world wide use it. I challenge any one, to name me a more sulitable product for serious Archers..

I built an endless loop string for my Excaliber Equnox crossbow using 32 stands B 50 , this set up propelled a 460 gr 2219 at 306 fps shot over an OELHER 33 . B 50 is quieter , which is not a factor with crossbows ( they just gona hear um when you shoot ) but bow vibration was less had real good broadhead flight , killed 2 old does on opening day , so I am satisfied , Now I have learned to build the
flemish type string , which I like better , still using the B 50

Comments about Brownell B-50 Bow String Material:

We use this product for making flemish strings for self made Longbows. The material is really strong and long lasting. My only complaint is that the red and green colors blead in to white. However, the dark colors mixed with a lighter color ie: Black and Tan work very well.

Comments about Brownell B-50 Bow String Material:

I am already shooting tighter groups and my bow is considerably quieter thanks to this material. I will never shoot another factory string unless it is this material. not to mention this is the first and only string I have ever built... now all my friends want one... you have to try it!

B-50 has been the gold standard for flemish twist and continous strings for many years. It has the strength to stand up to heavy use, and is still fast and quiet.
