The Modern Archer is a reprint from the book originally published in 1879. It was sub-titled: The Archer's Complete Guide, Instructions for the Use of the Long Bow, by An Expert, and includes the original Peck & Snyder Archery Catalog at the back of the book.

Illustrated with full-page and text engravings, archery handbooks and manuals were a reasonably popular enterprise among archery tackle and supply dealers from the mid to late 1800's.

Dealers often combined their own product catalogs with practical manuals as add-ins to give away to customers or to sell in-store. Peck and Snyder was a mid-Victorian sporting goods store known mostly for their reputation as purveyors of baseball equipment, including what today are considered to be the world's first baseball cards. Their company was based in New York, where they maintained a prosperous business diverging into many different venues of sport not the least of which was Archery. The Modern Archer is significant in its practical and historical value and is written in an entirely entertaining fashion with bits of historical anecdote and practical examples not found in any of the popular classics.
